This is a club, which means that the bar may only be open to club members.

The original clubhouse was built in 1836-7 to the designs of Sir Robert Smirke and his brother Sidney Smirke. It was the last of the great London clubs built in the Greek revival style including the interior, apart from the staircase remodelled in 1906-12. In 1952 the site was extended by purchase of no. 77 also.

As its name implies, membership is open to graduates of Oxford and Cambridge universities, with honorary membership extended to senior members of the British and foreign royal families. Famous past members include Gladstone, Attlee, and the Duke of Wellington.

Club facilities include a large library, squash courts, a billiard room, overnight accommodation, two dining rooms and two bars. Cask ale is available in the main bar.
