CAMRA accredited for serving consistently well-kept real ales.
The interior of this well-regarded Nicholson's pub underwent a significant refurbishment in October 2026 including the restoration of wooden paneling which were first removed in the 1980's when the ground floor bar partitions were also removed. It is situated on a narrow cobbled street close to the castle and has been voted local pub of the year several times. The elegantly decorated interior is on three levels, the lowest of which is reputed to house a passageway to the castle and is guarded by a knight in full amour. Ashby's Brewery tiles are retained on the floor by the entrance and hark back to the pubs former owners. Unusually, the pub has entrances on two different streets, Market Street and Church Street. The two regular beers are supplemented by four rotating guests often from St Austell.
