Fishermans Arms, Hartlepool Headland (Fish)

Opened in around 1860 as the Burton Vaults, it changed name to the Fishermans Arms in the 1920s. Affectionately known as “The Fish”, it is a warm, dog friendly, one roomed traditional pub, with no TVs, juke box nor gambling machines.

The pub is located in Southgate close to the Fish Quay and has been privately owned since 2017. It was refurbished in 2019, with the bar re-sited to the opposite side of the room.

Three cask beers are usually served, mostly from local or North East breweries. Keg and craft beers are also available, again sourced locally wherever possible.

The Fish is a great supporter of live music, with monthly Folk Club (Fisherfolk) and Blues Session (Bluesburn). Open Mic nights are on a Monday, and live music is held on most Saturday nights. The local sea-shanty group Monkeys Revenge is also based at The Fish. All details of music events are on their social media and web sites.

A popular Sunday Quiz is held with a raffle raising money for a charity of the month – usually a local well deserving charity.

The Fish has its own quarterly magazine – Fishermans Tales, which is available to read on-line via their website thefishhartlepool.co.uk with hard copies available in the pub whilst stock lasts.

This pub is popular, especially amongst those who like to chat rather than watching a TV screen, which the Fish does not have.
